CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
Learn to Salsa
Intensive Workshops
This intensive workshop gives a foundation of movement for those who has very little or no dance experience. Emphasis is to develop basic principles of
Salsa timing, partnering skills, basic foot work and variations of turn patterns.
Students will learn the basics to NYon2 club-style Salsa
in
4-week cycles. This program is a great socializing opportunity for individuals,
couples, parents and partners who'd like to learn a few moves and practice what
they learn at our scheduled socials and dance parties - group lessons and
performances included.
Salsa 1
Absolute Beginner
An introductory course of Salsa partner dance in progressive 8-week cycles. No
salsa or dance experience is needed, and no need to bring a partner. We're here to learn while meeting new friends in
our fun classes.
Emphasis is to develop basic principles of timing, partnering skills, basic foot
work and variations of turn patterns. The goal is for one to execute simple turn
patterns and have the confidence to move on the dance floor.
Salsa 1.5 Beginner Styling & Open Shines
This class teaches mini-shine routines incorporating
body movements, arm placements, hand
styling, shoulder rolls, hip undulations to be used in open shines and
partner work.
Both male and female students will
learn to use their bodies and footwork to express themselves in the dance.
Open to Salsa 1 beginners going to Salsa 2 level students who wish to add flair
and style to their dancing.
Salsa 2 Beyond Beginner + practice sessions
This 75-minute class teaches beyond basics footwork and more dynamic shines. New
turn patterns and open shines are introduced weekly to upgrade your moves to
advanced
beginners level. Additional 30 minute after-class practice sessions is the
perfect place to drill your new moves. This class is for students who have
completed Salsa 1 Beginner course or have 3 months' experience in club-style
Salsa On2 dancing. One must already have
Basics, Cross Body Lead and Single Turns mastered.
Salsa 2.5 Spinning, Turns & Footwork in Partnerwork
Learn proper techniques and secrets to achieve multiples spins - solo
and with partners - for both leaders and followers. Ladies and men's styling are
incorporated into turn patterns to create fun & spicy partnerwork.
Open to Salsa 2 Advance Beginners/Intermediate level students who wish to
upgrade their dance skills.
Salsa 3 Intermediate
Turn Patterns
Nothing but turn patterns for a full hour. Proper footwork and leading techniques will be broken
down as more advanced turn patterns are introduced. This is an ongoing class and
drop-ins are welcome. 30-minutes guided practice after class.
Students must have completed two
consecutive Salsa 2 courses or have at least 9 months to 1-year experience in
club-style Salsa On2 dancing.
Salsa 4 Performance Workshop
This is a 12-week intensive performance training workshop for intermediate-level students
who wish to bring their dancing to the next level and to showcase their talents
in the spotlight.
Performance Workshops are offered
twice a year from September to December (performance in late December & January) and
from February to May (performance in late May & June). Each 12 weeks,
students will learn a choreographed routine incorporating all aspects of
Salsa/Latin dance techniques: styling, spinning, body movements, open shines &
turn pattern partner work. Students completing the 15-week training will perform at NYSalsaFiesta
Parties and other social dance events.
This class is open to solid Salsa 3
intermediate students who have completed two consecutive Salsa 2 courses or have
at least one year experience in club-style Salsa On2 dancing. Must be
able/willing to handle double spin turns.
Club-Style Cha Cha
Cha Cha Cha is a cousin of Salsa dance
with slower tempo that emphasizes musicality, body
movements and footwork. This course gives a foundation of Cha Cha timing
combined with Afro-Cuban body movements, open shines and multiple spins
technique in partner work.
Both male and female students will
learn proper technique to execute multiple spins - solo or with partners -
with weekly spinning drills. Salsa students will also find Cha Cha
footwork very helpful to execute multiple traveling turns, dancing to slower
music. No need to bring partners.
Salsa & Latin Youth Performance Class
This is a 9-month Salsa dance program for youths from age 7-17 that runs from
September till June with a full-costumed recital at the year-end performance
show.
Students will learn all the basic fundamentals to Latin dance techniques, principle of
Salsa timing, open shines, spinning technique, styling, body isolations
and partner work.
